3 Design Trends I’m Leaving Behind in 2024… and 3 I’m Taking with Me Into 2025

I can’t believe we’re almost at the end of another year! December is always my favorite month to look back and think about what design trends started to emerge over the last 12 months. It’s always fun to try to predict which trends will expand and carry forward into the new year. As I’ve grown as a designer, my tastes have naturally gravitated toward more timeless interior design features, which I think can largely be attributed to the concept of,  “when you know better, you do better.” When I am feeling a bit more daring, though, I like to use my own home as a playground to try out new trends so that when I’m working in a client’s home the execution feels less risky.

I’ve talked about design trends a few times before on my blog and these are always some of my most-read articles.  I think we all just love to see interior design trends evolve and it’s so fun to get inspired by fresh new ways to update our homes. So without further ado, here are three trends I’m leaving behind in 2024, and three trends I’m taking with me into 2025!

ONE

LEAVING BEHIND: Mixed Metals

I’m kicking things off with a trend that might be my most controversial take of the three! Yes, it’s true… I’m no longer a fan of mixing metals! Before you click away and close your tab, let me explain. I do think there is still a really  classic and beautiful way to mix metals. however… I also think this is one of those design trends that worked its way down into the mainstream a little too quickly, and is now one of those things that too many people are getting wrong. I cringe every time I see a kitchen with brass lights, a chrome faucet, bronze hardware, and stainless steel appliances. It’s TOO MUCH! So, this is a trend I’m leaving behind in 2024. If it can’t be done right, we shouldn’t be doing it all. Here’s what I’m encouraging you to do instead…

TAKING WITH ME: Mixing Metal Finishes

Want to know how an experienced interior designer keeps a kitchen or bathroom looking dynamic without mixing metals? Well, it’s simple! Instead of mixing metals (i.e. brass hardware with a polished nickel faucet), mix your metal finishes instead. If you love brass but don’t want to commit to it throughout a space, try doing a polished brass faucet with aged brass lighting and hardware. Boom – instantly your space will look distinguished and feel dynamic at the same time. Mixing metal finishes is a more elegant way to spice things up without making the space look super incoherent.

If you’re doing stainless steel appliances in your kitchen, I would especially recommend sticking to one other metal in the space. Don’t believe the lies that your kitchen will look boring with only one metal – it won’t! Just make sure you’re including enough detail in the other features so that there’s harmony and intention. Some of my favorite finishes to mix are polished nickel and stainless steel, oil rubbed bronze and copper, and polished brass with aged or antiqued brass.

LEAVING BEHIND: Rustic, Weathered Finishes

As a big fan of antiques, I am the proud owner of quite a few furniture and decor pieces that look weathered, rustic and downright run down – and I love ‘em! The more character a piece has, the better. I think that there will always be a place for pieces that show signs of how well-loved they were.

However, I’m starting to gravitate towards balancing those pieces out with their high-gloss counterparts. Which is why I'm taking metallic and high-gloss finishes with me into 2025!

TAKING WITH ME: Metallic, High-Gloss Finishes

This might just be the design trend I’m most looking forward to incorporating in 2025. I have my eye on polished nickel and brass ceiling lighting, shiny reflective table lamps, and even high-gloss cabinetry and paint! I think this is something you’re going to see lots of folks in the design world start to experiment with more, and I’m super excited to see how this one develops.

THREE

LEAVING BEHIND: Boring, plain tile work

Okay, it’s confession time…and I’m super embarrassed to admit this. Did you guys know that I actually struggle with designing bathrooms?? It’s true… I do!  I can knock a kitchen out in my sleep, but bathrooms keep me up at night. And here’s why: I just can’t get down with boring, cookie cutter tiles! It just does not get me excited. And so, when I sit down to design a bathroom, I’m immediately overwhelmed by all of the tile pieces I’m going to have to specify. Although it takes a little extra work, there is no space to take boring tile work into 2025. Instead, we’re taking unique tile configurations with us!

TAKING WITH ME: Unique Tile Configurations

Tile is one of the most dynamic and opportunity-filled finishes you will ever work with in your home. Even if you’re using a standard 3” x 6” subway tile, there are so many different layouts and arrangements that you can specify in order to make the room feel unique! When I say I struggle with designing bathrooms, what I’m really saying is I obsess over tile details because I know how impactful they can be when you take a little extra time to add some detail.

If you have a bathroom renovation on your agenda for 2025, spend a little bit of time on Pinterest getting familiar with some amazing tile work before specifying the same old tiles everyone else is using. And, don’t forget: the best cheat code for amazingly unique tile configurations will always be mosaic tiles. Often sold on a 12” x 12” net backing, these fancy sheets are ready to be installed and will give your bathroom just the right amount of detail.
